Art During Lockdown and Exciting News!

Hope you are all well and keeping safe.

I just wanted to share with you some art that I've been doing lately during the lockdown.

These are 12 mini abstract paintings on watercolour paper, each around 8"x 8". I worked on them all at the same time. The materials I used were charcoal, acrylic inks, acrylic paints and acrylic pens. I wanted to try and paint more abstractly and was inspired by the artist Tracy Verdugo. She offers some art mentoring as well as some free courses. I will sit with these for a bit and then see what I need to add to them.

I've also gone back and reworked some old mini paintings on canvas.They need a bit more doing to them, I may add more paint or add collage elements as well. But will post when they are further developed.

We have also had really nice weather lately, so I have been sat in our back garden.  Its been very relaxing to just sit by the water feature and weave.

I also have some exciting news-I am in the process of updating my website! Something which I have been meaning to do for a while, but now with the lockdown and I can focus on doing that. I will keep you updated and let you know when it's up and running.

Remember these-

 

I thought they all need something extra.

 So I choose some rubber stamps I carved and began stamping...

 Then I thought... no, they need something else. So I painted the backgrounds with acrylic inks and added more stamping as well to the background.

I'm much more satisfied now.

This was the piece before I added the leaves.
The lines were done using permanent markers
and then painted with acrylic inks.

This is how it looked before I added the stamped pattern over it.
Most of the lines and shapes are done using permanent markers;
the gold section in the middle was painted with acrylic inks.

I used black permanent marker to draw the shapes,
I then painted the shapes with acrylic inks.

 So what do you all think? Do you prefer the before or the after versions?

I think I prefer the before version of Untitled MMC10 and the after version of Untitled MMC9 .

Catching Up...

This weekend was pretty busy for us so I wasn't able to make any blog entries, sorry.

I should be on track now, blog wise. So here are some pieces I've been working and some materials I used.

 Golden's Gel Medium, magazine shapes, flat brush

 I started out this piece by drawing with permanent markers and then used acrylic inks for the larger areas.

I then thought I wanted to add more interest so I collaged the leaves cut from magazines on top. I like the way the leaves look like they are "flying" or "floating" on the surface.

I did the same for this piece, except I also added a black stamp to create a pattern.

 Here I did the lines in markers and filled in the shapes with acrylic inks.

I also added the leaves here to follow the "current" of the pattern.

New Work

Hello,

Here are three mixed media pieces I'm working on.

I started them a couple of months ago-just the background, using the coffee staining technique I used before. Today I added white doilies on each of the three pieces using gel medium.

 

 

I then painted three other doilies using transparent inks. 

 

 

When they were dry, I used gel medium to adhere them to the paper.

 

 

When I brushed the gel medium on this piece it tore.

Rather than put it neatly back with the rest of the doily, I'll leave it. I think it looks interesting.

There is still more to do, I will have to sleep on it and see what next week brings.

I'm not sure on titles yet, the idea is that all three will hang together horizontally on the wall.

Do you have a suggestion for a title(s)?

coffee stained backgrounds

I started seeing lots of doilies lately, so I thought I would experiment with making some of my own. I wanted to expand on the theme of circles. For the doilies, I used various handmade papers- some had leaves and flowers in them which gave them a nice texture. I wanted to use thin paper so that some of the coffee stained background could show through in places. I created the doilies by folding circles and cutting out various shapes-just like when you were in school and made paper snowflakes.  I then used stamps over the doilies to add more interest. I also wanted to play with adding text. So rather use my own handwriting, I used rub-on lettering. I like the way they turned out. I think I will continue with this theme to see where it takes me.
