Happy Halloween

Hello,

Just been out with my son doing some Trick or Treating. We were't gone long because we only went to a few friends' houses; he was tired after the fifth house. I think he just wanted to eat his goodies, which I totally understand. We'll be home now waiting for any ghouls or goblins who turns up although Halloween isn't as popular here in the UK as in the States.

Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

Hello,

Many people will be celebrating Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead throughout Mexico and other Latin countries; its celebrated between 31 October -2 November. Family members and friends gather together to pray for and remember their loved ones who have died. The tradition also includs building private altars called ofrendas to honour the deceased with sugar skulls, marigold flowers, the deceased favourite food and some of their belongings. Many people will also wear traditional Mexican clothing and paint "sugar skull"on their faces. 

One of the blogs I regularly follow is an artist named Denise, her blog is Permama. She celebrates Dia de los Muertos and has a really cute video on there which illustrates what the tradition is about.

There's also an article on Mamiverse about the celebration.

I've also seen loads of images lately using the "sugar skull" design.

 I thought I would make my own version of a sugar skull; I used models from a magazine and painted them using acrylic and gouache paints.

 I also tried it on me. What do you think?

This is another mixed media painting I've been working on.

Its not quite finished but I thought I would post it anyway. 

This is the painting in its various stages.

Materials used- magazine pages, printed paper, acrylic paints, acrylic gel medium on streatched canvas.

Techniques used- image transfer, collage, stencelling and stamping in background.

Here is one of the mixed media pieces I've been working on lately. It still not finished and I'll have to sit with it a bit to decide what it needs.

These is the piece in its many stages.

Materials used so far- acrylic gel medium, acrylic paints, magazine cutouts and printed paper on stretched canvas. 

Technique used so far- image transfer for the figure, stencilling and stamping in the background.
